Katsura Yamauchi

Katsura Yamauchi is a Japanese saxophonist, composer and free improviser born in Beppu in 1954. He began playing saxophone in the early 1970s and moved quickly from modern jazz toward free improvisation and composition.

Alongside his own Salmo Sax practice, Yamauchi has long worked as a concert organiser and collaborator, helping bring international improvisers to Japan and developing a highly personal language centred on breath, resonance and the physical character of sound.
