Jean-Michel Van Schouwburg
Jean-Michel van Schouwburg is a Belgian vocal improviser, writer and critic known for developing an extended vocal language within free improvisation. His performances explore phonetic sounds, breath, overtones and expressive articulations that move beyond conventional melody or song text.
He has collaborated with musicians from the European improvised-music scene and has written extensively about experimental recordings and live performances. His work often emphasises the voice as an acoustic instrument capable of fine timbral detail, spontaneous interaction and dramatic changes of register. Creative Sources documents his contributions to improvising ensembles and the wider community of experimental music.
