Andreas Backer

Andreas Backer (born 1981) is a Norwegian-Swedish vocalist, improviser, composer, pianist and lyricist whose work focuses on the voice as an open sound instrument. After early trumpet studies, he shifted his main instrument to voice and studied jazz vocals, piano, improvisation and composition in Stavanger and Stockholm, followed by further composition studies at the Norwegian Academy of Music.

Backer’s work crosses free improvisation, contemporary vocal technique, song and ensemble writing. His recorded projects include solo voice, the group Hot Four and duo work with percussionist Raymond Strid, and he has collaborated with musicians from across the Scandinavian improvised-music scene.
