Germany · turntables, visual art & sound

Claus van Bebber (born 1949) is a German turntablist, sound artist and visual artist whose work treats vinyl records and record players as physical instruments. In performance he works with multiple turntables and prepared or found records, building layered fields of sound through speed changes, loops, damaged surfaces and low-tech processing.

His parallel visual practice includes sculpture and landscape-based work, while his musical activity spans free improvisation, sound art and collaborative performance. Across several decades he has developed a distinctive approach in which the material qualities of vinyl are foregrounded rather than used simply to reproduce recorded music.
