Gonçalo Almeida

Gonçalo Almeida (born 1978 in Lisbon) is a Portuguese double bassist, composer and improviser based in Rotterdam. His work moves between free improvisation, contemporary jazz, experimental music and heavier electric forms, with the double bass at the centre of a broad collaborative practice.

He leads and co-leads projects including Hydra Ensemble, Lama, Albatre and The Attic, and has worked extensively across the Dutch and Portuguese improvised-music scenes. Alongside international touring and recording, Almeida develops solo work and runs Cylinder Recordings as a platform for experimental collaborations.
