Günter Christmann

Germany · trombone, cello, composition & improvisation

Günter Christmann (born 1942) is a German trombonist, cellist, composer and improviser who has been a central figure in European free improvisation since the late 1960s. He was associated with groups led by Rüdiger Carl and Peter Kowald and was a member of the Globe Unity Orchestra.

From 1979 onward he developed the long-running Vario project in changing line-ups and increasingly placed cello alongside trombone as an equal improvising voice. His work also connects music with film, visual art and other performance forms.
