Australia · violin, composition, instrument building & improvisation

Jon Rose is an Australian violinist, composer and instrument inventor born in England in 1951, internationally known for experimental music involving strings, improvisation, performance and instrument building. His projects have explored the violin through unconventional bowing, electronic modification and invented or enlarged string instruments.

He has collaborated with musicians including Fred Frith, Derek Bailey and many improvisers from different countries. Projects such as The Relative Violin and The Fence Project combine music with performance, architecture and environmental sound. His Creative Sources appearances document an imaginative practice that investigates the histories, mechanics and unexpected expressive possibilities of string instruments.
