Johannes Schmitz

Johannes Schmitz is a German guitarist and improviser whose music explores the detailed acoustic and amplified possibilities of the guitar. His playing moves between individual notes, sustained resonance, rhythmic gestures and sounds produced through unconventional instrumental techniques.

Creative Sources documents his work on Schwebend (CS730), a collaboration with double bassist Stefan Scheib. The recording brings together two string instruments with contrasting registers and acoustic behaviour, creating music through close interaction and changes in texture. Schmitz's guitar contributes to a flexible ensemble language in which melodic ideas and more abstract sounds can develop without a predetermined formal structure.
