Matthias Muche

Matthias Muche is a German trombonist, composer and media artist based in Cologne. His work moves between improvisation, contemporary composition, visual art and music theatre, with particular attention to the bodily and spatial dimensions of sound. He uses extended techniques to explore the instrument beyond conventional brass performance.

He studied music in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Cologne and completed postgraduate work at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne. He co-founded the Frischzelle festival and was awarded the WDR Jazz Prize for Improvisation in 2021. His recordings and performances frequently bring sound into dialogue with film, movement and visual processes.
