Marcus Rojas

New York City, USA · tuba, jazz, classical & improvised music

Marcus Rojas is an American tuba player born in New York City in 1963, known for his work across contemporary classical music, jazz, experimental music and improvisation. Raised in Brooklyn, he studied at the High School of Music & Art and the New England Conservatory, developing an unusually flexible language on the tuba.

His projects include the experimental group Spanish Fly and collaborations with John Zorn, Bill Frisell and numerous orchestral and chamber-music artists. Rojas brings agility, unusual articulation and a wide spectrum of acoustic colour to an instrument often associated with low-register accompaniment. Creative Sources documents this inventive approach in international improvising ensembles.
