Mark Sanders

UK · drums, percussion & free improvisation

Mark Sanders is a British drummer and percussionist internationally associated with free improvisation, contemporary jazz and experimental music. His playing ranges from complex rhythmic activity to subtle acoustic detail, using drums, cymbals, objects and changing surfaces to respond directly to other performers.

He has worked with musicians including Evan Parker, John Butcher, Paul Dunmall and Veryan Weston, alongside numerous improvising ensembles in Britain and abroad. Through duos, trios and larger groups, he explores collective interaction without predetermined rhythmic roles. His Creative Sources recordings document a versatile approach in which percussion becomes both an independent musical voice and a catalyst for group invention.
