Maggie Nicols
Maggie Nicols is a Scottish vocalist, improviser, performer and composer who has helped shape European creative music since the late 1960s. She joined John Stevens's Spontaneous Music Ensemble and later performed in Keith Tippett's large ensemble Centipede, bringing an extraordinary range of vocal sounds and theatrical gestures into improvised music.
In 1977 she co-founded the Feminist Improvising Group, connecting experimental performance with collaborative artistic activism. She has also worked with Julie Tippetts, Irène Schweizer and Joëlle Léandre, among many others, while developing participatory improvisation workshops. Creative Sources released On Dizziness (CS786), documenting her ongoing commitment to spontaneous vocal expression.
