Matthias Schubert
Matthias Schubert is a German tenor saxophonist and composer born in Kassel in 1960. He studied jazz in Hamburg after early training on oboe and has developed a powerful and distinctive approach to saxophone improvisation, bringing together melodic invention, extended technique and energetic ensemble performance.
He has worked with Albert Mangelsdorff, Graham Collier, Simon Nabatov and numerous other jazz musicians. His ensembles have included combinations with tuba player Carl Ludwig Hübsch, trombonist Wolter Wierbos and the Multiple Joy(ce) Orchestra. Creative Sources documents his instrumental work within the European experimental-music community, connecting his free-jazz background to collective composition.
