Richard Barrett

Richard Barrett (born 1959 in Swansea) is a Welsh composer and improvising performer whose work spans intricately notated composition, free improvisation and live electronics. His long-term collaborations include the electronic duo FURT with Paul Obermayer, ELISION Ensemble and the Evan Parker Electro-Acoustic Ensemble.

Based in Belgrade, Barrett teaches at the Institute of Sonology at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague and at Leiden University’s Academy for Creative and Performing Arts. His recent recordings include Sargasso, FURT’s Non-fiction and Clouds in a Cloudless Sky in 2025, continuing a practice in which composition, improvisation and digital performance increasingly overlap.
