Ulrich Phillipp

Ulrich Phillipp is a German double bassist, improviser and sound artist whose experimental work includes acoustic bass, live electronics, installation and performances combining sound with other art forms. He has been active in improvised music since the late 1970s.

His projects include HumaNoise Congress, a long-running collective concerned with experimental performance and unconventional sound-making. Creative Sources recordings document his contribution to ensembles where the double bass becomes a flexible source of resonance, noise, articulation and interaction. Rather than treating the instrument as rhythmic accompaniment, his practice emphasises detailed sound, texture and the development of musical form through collective exploration.
